The El Salvador Gang Truce – challenges to the construction of a peace between the Maras and local dynamics of mediation

Maria Jose Cornejo is a Ph.D. candidate of the Erasmus Mundus Doctorate in Cultural and Global Criminology (DCGC). She holds an M.A. in International Public Policy from the University of Tsukuba in Japan, and a Bachelors in Political Science. Her research is focused on local dynamics of mediation in the context of the historical El Salvador mara Truce, which has been so far the only initiative that has effectively lowered the homicide rate of the country. She is exploring the challenges in a pacification process that involves maras, government and civil society actors.
