Utrecht University is one of Europe’s leading research universities ranked first in the Netherlands, eleventh in Europe and forty-eighth in the world in the Shanghai Ranking 2011. Utrecht is internationally recognised for its high-quality, innovative approach to both research and teaching. It is the most international university in the Netherlands, with 130 nationalities working and studying together, hosting the largest academic Summer School in Europe.

The Utrecht School of Law offers an extensive educational programme including 8 English-language Master Programmes. It trains around 80 PhD candidates.

Criminological research and education at the USL is based at the prestigious Willem Pompe Institute for Criminal Law and Criminology, established in 1934. Most research is in the fields of human rights and international criminal law, fundamental values and criminal procedure, the globalisation and internationalisation of crime and crime control, and cultural criminology.

The Institute delivers an MA in Global Criminology, an MA in International Human Rights and an LLM in Criminal Justice. At Utrecht, Professors Frank Bovenkerk and Dina Siegel are leading cultural criminologists on the European continent.
